LED Street Light Retrofit Project in Chile

LED Street Light Retrofit Project in Chile

Project Summary

Back in 2014, Schréder dominated the market in Chile and the competition there was quite intense. However, Kingsun eventually won the project -- the 100km highway LED street lighting in Santiago, which is also our very first highway LED lighting project in Chile. 7 years later, relying on the comprehensive solutions and reliable quality we always provide, Kingsun again triumphed over all other strong competitors in the industry and assisted our partner in delivering another project successfully in Chile in 2021.

The Challenge

  • Many birds, particularly pigeons, often enjoy perching on the top of street light fixtures, and some of them even make nests on fixtures, frequently leaving unwelcome and unsightly feces. Over time, the birds’ feces piles up on the light fixture and drip down when it rains, causing unhygienic problems. Usually, the local authorities have to clean up the messes once a year.
  • Also, since the birds build nests to protect eggs and hatchlings, their nests act like blankets on top of LED street lights, and this addition of constant heat to the light fixture sometimes disrupts the function of electrical devices inside the fixtures. Therefore, the local authorities hope to keep the birds off street lights.
  • The local government actively responds to the global call for energy conservation and emission reduction, and demands lighting solutions that can save energy and lower emission and light pollution significantly.
  • For large-scale procurement projects, the packages usually contain materials that are deemed to be harmful to the local environment since they do not decompose easily once in the landfill. Particularly Styrofoam, is non-biodegradable and non-recyclable, and it causes local government great trouble in recycling later on.

Our Solution

  • Proposed to replace the HPS street light with AGOLA series LED street light. We adopted an integrated design in AGOLA series, so the back of the fixture is flat and smooth. Besides, it comes with IK09 tempered glass cover. Hence, AGOLA series is much easier to clean when there’s feces.
  • To prevent the birds’ intrusion on street light fixtures, we suggested a bird spike on the fixtures that the birds were most likely to nest on.
  • Also, we improved the materials in both lens and tempered glass cover. By doing so, we enhanced the light transmission greatly, and the overall lighting efficiency could be 150+ LM/W. Meanwhile, a NEMA 7PIN socket was mounted to provide access to the smart control system in the city, which allows the local authority to adjust, modify and monitor the amount of time that the lights are turned on in order to save energy. Besides, it enables the local authorities to send maintenance services to fix street lights promptly.
  • Our packaging engineers did comparison tests among various package materials and carried out multiple tests such as the carton drop test, then suggested our partner replace the styrofoam with cardboard. Later on, this change in the packaging was confirmed as environmentally friendly and then approved by our partner.
